\u00abIt seems likely that Pfitzner was acquainted with Richard Wagner’s remarks to the Paris public concerning Der Freisch\u00fctz<\/em> (1841) in which Wagner claims that the poem of Freisch\u00fctz<\/em> seem to have been written by the Bohemian forests themselves. The specific German character of the tale, Wagner says, lies precisely in its depiction of Nature. In these passages, both Pfitzner and Wagner are placing Freisch\u00fctz within a long cultural tradition that locates the national essence of Germany in its forests. Like so many other aspects of German cultural identity, this tradition was oppositional in its structure, pitting the German forests against the Mediterranean city, the greenery of the north against the masonry of the south.\u00bb (S.C. \nLa foresta nel Freisch\u00fctz<\/em> \u00e8 la rappresentazione del tratto fondamentale di una nazione e di ci\u00f2 che la contrappone ad altre nazioni e civilt\u00e0. Per questa caratteristica il Freisch\u00fctz<\/em> \u00e8 un caso unico. La focalizzazione sui personaggi nell’Euryanthe<\/em> \u00e8 invece un passo indietro, per un motivo ben preciso: nel Freisch\u00fctz<\/em> tutta la vicenda si svolgeva ai margini della foresta e al mondo dei cacciatori; nell’Euryanthe<\/em> tutto si svolge nel mondo raffinato della corte medioevale.<\/span>
\nWagner rappresenter\u00e0 un altro passo indietro, poich\u00e9 torner\u00e0 al teatro tradizionale, soprattutto con l’opera che doveva regolare i conti col teatro francese e italiano: I maestri cantori<\/em>. In Wagner lo scontro foresta citt\u00e0 sar\u00e0 del tutto assente, cos\u00ec come la messa in discussione della fonte non germanica del teatro.<\/span>
\nIn Wagner la questione non sar\u00e0 mai tra luoghi, ma all’interno del teatro. Tutto si svolger\u00e0 dentro il meccanismo teatrale. La Tetralogia \u00e8 senz’altro l’opera wagneriana pi\u00f9 vicina alla mitologia germanica. Ma anch’essa \u00e8 tallonata dallo spirito teatrale. L’oro del Reno<\/em> e il Siegfried<\/em> sono le opere che pi\u00f9 si spingono oltre il teatro. La musica sembra un’onda continua e ha una compattezza unica. Siegfried<\/em>, inoltre, riprende felicemente momenti dell’antica poesia germanica, come la gara di indovinelli. La valchiria<\/em> e Il crepuscolo<\/em> ricadono invece nella spirale del teatro. Cio\u00e8 del teatro peggiore. Il teatro \u00e8 qualcosa che viene dalla Grecia, che nulla ha a che fare con la mitologia. Wagner stesso intendeva collegarsi alla tragedia greca. Nel teatro c’\u00e8 sempre qualcosa che puzza di latino, di italiano. Vale a dire: puzza di meticcio.
